Let's Talk About Sex...

We can waste so much time and effort trying to make our past better that we forget to focus on constructing our future and traumatic experiences can often keep us stuck in the past. Trauma work can be difficult, in fact it’s often working best when it is difficult (difficult is different to harm btw). Understanding your expectations of yourself and your therapist can have a massive impact on your recovery.

Therapy cannot undo an interaction, erase an experience, improve our past, or make us forget. I’ve had many a conversation about what recovery from trauma looks like - unfortunately it is not a banishment of bad things. Instead it is often managing something that will stay with us forever, or understanding our experiences differently so that we can go on to write more of our story in ways that make us feel safer, happier, or empowered.

Therapy isn’t just for crisis or psychiatric conditions. It’s also for growth and enhancing your life at any stage.

Knowing when to push and when to rest is important. There will be times you have to work hard to get through something tough. But you are still allowed to have feelings about the hard things.

Social media is not just dances and brain rot. It shapes beliefs and attitudes about nearly every aspect of life. We have platforms that allow us to share pretty much anything we like. This has power.

There are no bad emotions, just uncomfortable ones. Imagine a world where no one felt anxious - chaos would reign. Some of these uncomfortable emotions are designed to keep us safe. Emotions are signals.

Not all bad things that happens to us are trauma or traumatic. Not all behaviour is a response to that trauma. Sometimes it’s personality, sometimes a mental health condition, sometimes genetics, sometimes a social response, sometimes it’s a really big uncomfortable emotion that sticks with us.

How do you connect with other people? Do you share stories, give people gifts, do stuff for them?

It’s kind of “love language stuff”, but also when do you connect with others? Are you an organiser and have your connection time as part of a routine? Or are you a bit more spontaneous with it? Maybe even searching for it only at the last minute when you feel desperate? Does too much connection overwhelm you?

Thats like an 8-barrelled question I know, but there are no right or wrong answers here. It’s really comes down to - does it work for you?

Negative experiences in our relationships can erode our ability to trust and be vulnerable with others. In a sense, this helps protect us from being hurt again; however we can also run the risk of seeing all relationships as dangerous.

When we view all relationships or interactions as risk and people as enemies, we hurt ourselves in a different way. We not only rob ourselves of socialisation and connection, but also rob others (who haven’t wronged us) of the chance to connect with us.

Where do we go then when we need help, or love, or simply want to share?

Of course, we need to remain safe where we can but no meaningful relationship began by persistently shutting others out or always doing things ourselves. Human beings are instead social creatures. We thrive in a tribe.

It’s been a big few months for me, and my practice of mindfulness and focused breathing has fallen to the wayside. So it’s no wonder I’ve felt a bit burnt out and tired.

Proactively engaging in focused or mindful breathing has many benefits. It’s amazing we don’t use it more; particularly for something so easily accessible to us.

If focused breathing is new to you and you want to use it as a regulation strategy, it’s important to make it a routine. We want to practice breathing strategies when we don’t need them, so they’re more accessible when we do. Practicing when we’re okay if how we build muscle memory for these things. After all, when was the last time you learnt a knee skill while in meltdown mode?

There’s lots of different types of breathing techniques you can try. My favourite is just breathing out longer than I breathe in but you can also try (google for descriptions):

🌊 ocean breath

⚓️ anchor breathing

But our brains and bodies really aren’t designed to keep up with the amount of pressure we put on them in this modern world. So we actively have to work at resting - which for some is just another task they have to do. The trap some people fall into is that they think it has to be an hour long meditation, full massage, or month long holiday. Those things are nice but often not attainable on the reg.

If that’s the case for you; where you haven’t quite made it to the point where you can spontaneously rest here’s a tip: schedule in time for it. Start small , 5 minutes of just something you enjoy or mindful rest.

I enjoy a good bush walk or hike but they aren’t always accessible, so here are some other things I do for a quick rest and recharge.

What an adventure! I went to a remote part of the country because life forced my hand and I needed a job. Turns out, it ain’t half bad. I met some amazing people, learnt some new things, and saw some amazing views.
